Effect of Central Physeal Destruction of Distal femur on Longitudinal Femoral and Tivial Growth in Growing Rabbit
Lee Dong-Sick

Moon Myung-Sang
Abstract
To clarify the effect of central physeal destruction of distal femur on longitudinal femoral and tibial growth, central destruction of distal femoral physis on immature rabbits was performed, by a drill. Then serial radiograms were taken and from the radiograms ;growth in femur and tibia was measured. The histological observations were also made.
The results obtained were as follows;
1. Central destruction of distal femoral physis of growing rabbits led to epiphysio-metaphyseal fusion by a osseous bridge. This bony bridge brought the growth arrest at the distal femoral physis and by it the entire length of the femur was shortened without deformity.
2. Compensatory overgrowth of the proximal femur was observed by the growth stimulation of the proximal physis.
3. There was no conclusive evidence that defect in growth at distal femoral
¢¥
physis stimulates growth in the other bones, such as the adjacent proximal tibial physis.
